Six Algerian military aircraft were reported in Niger on 1 September by two media outlets, which offered differing accounts. Africa24 TV said they were a donation from Algeria to the Nigerien Armed Forces, received in Niamey. France 24, for its part, referred to an Algerian deployment in Niger.

Four fighter jets and two support aircraft

According to Africa24 TV, the package includes four Sukhoi Su-30 fighter jets, an Il-76 transport aircraft and an Il-78 tanker aircraft, making six aircraft in total. The outlet said the donation was intended to strengthen the operational capabilities of the Nigerien Armed Forces as well as strategic cooperation between Algeria and Niger.

Two interpretations of the aircraft presence

In its programme presentation, France 24 described the arrival of four fighter jets and two military aircraft as a break with the historic doctrine of non-intervention attributed to Algiers since the country's independence. The channel placed the matter in the aftermath of what it said was a foiled mutiny attempt in Niger during the preceding weekend.

The information provided does not make it possible to establish whether the terms “donation” and “deployment” describe the same operation from different angles, nor to clarify its arrangements. However, both reports agree on a total of six aircraft and the presence of four fighter jets.
