The 2026-2027 school year in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is taking place amid health concerns in Ituri, where the Ebola outbreak is weighing on the resumption of classes. Nationwide, nearly 31 million pupils were expected in schools, but the situation varies across regions, particularly in the east of the country.

Schools mobilised for prevention

In Ituri, the military governor intends to involve pupils in the fight against Ebola. Schools will have to devote time each week to raising awareness about preventing the disease and the measures aimed at limiting its spread.

In Bunia, the initiative is bringing health prevention into classrooms as the start of the school year is affected by the risk posed by the outbreak.

An uneven return in the east

While classes have resumed in several areas of the DRC, the start of the school year remains uneven in the east of the country. Ituri illustrates this situation, with school organisation now combined with regular Ebola prevention messages.
