At UGB, a 15-day civic camp set to become an annual event

Gaston Berger University (UGB) in Saint-Louis has concluded a 15-day civic camp aimed at strengthening civic-mindedness and citizenship among nearly 400 students. The activity was held in a framework focused on military rigour and discipline.

The army, gendarmerie and several paramilitary bodies were involved in the initiative. The police, Water and Forestry Service and Customs, in particular, took part in the training sessions.

Awareness-raising on Customs' duties

Customs led an awareness-raising day on 24 August 2026. Discussions focused on its duties, tax compliance, Gender policy and the fight against international drug trafficking.

According to Lieutenant-Colonel Mouhamed Niang, the participation of his administration should help train students who could become role models and promote these requirements across the campus.

Towards institutionalising the programme

UGB Secretary-General Ousmane Diallo expressed satisfaction with the results achieved. According to him, the initiative meets the objective of reviving civic culture among students.

The university believes that young people who completed the camp will be able to have a positive influence on their peers. It wants to repeat the initiative at least once a year.

Discussions are also under way with higher authorities to extend the civic camp to other public universities and higher education institutions in Senegal.
