NASA launched the Roman Space Telescope on Sunday, a mission dedicated to observing and mapping the cosmos.

Presented as a new “Atlas of the Universe”, the instrument is to carry out a research programme planned over several years. Its goal is to produce a large-scale map of the Universe.

A mission focused on major questions in physics

Beyond this mapping effort, the Roman telescope is intended to contribute to the study of some of physics’ most important mysteries. NASA aims to collect data that could provide greater insight into phenomena that remain poorly understood.

The launch marks the beginning of a long-term scientific undertaking based on space-based observation of the cosmos and the creation of this atlas.
