Netherlands moves 86 tonnes of gold to the United Kingdom amid geopolitical uncertainty

The Netherlands has transferred 86 tonnes of gold from the United States and Canada to the United Kingdom, citing “growing geopolitical instability”. The move was carried out through several methods, combining purchase and sale transactions with physical transfers of the metal.

The physically transported share amounts to more than 27 tonnes. This gold was first shipped from the United States and Canada to the Netherlands before being sent on to London.

The total volume of 86 tonnes therefore does not consist solely of physically transported metal. Part of the movement was carried out through purchase and sale transactions, while more than 27 tonnes were physically transported.

The United Kingdom was the final destination of the operation, with London selected after the physical shipments passed through the Netherlands.

The decision was justified by reference to rising geopolitical instability. The transfer changes the location of the gold concerned, previously held in the United States and Canada, in favour of the United Kingdom.
