In Bunia, 180 Senegalese gendarmes honoured by MONUSCO
MONUSCO honoured 180 members of the Senegalese SENFPU 2-18 contingent, including 39 women, on 28 August 2026 in Bunia. Deployed in Ituri since September 2025, the unit notably took part in joint patrols aimed at maintaining a security presence in the city and surrounding areas.
The United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) honoured 180 Senegalese gendarmes from the SENFPU 2-18 contingent during a ceremony held on 28 August 2026 in Bunia, in Ituri province. The personnel awarded included 39 women.
The medal presentation recognises the unit’s commitment and service during its mandate within the Mission, the Senegalese gendarmerie said.
A deployment under way since September 2025
SENFPU 2-18 arrived in its mission area on 18 September 2025. According to the gendarmerie, it contributed to MONUSCO’s efforts to ensure security and protect civilian populations.
During its deployment, the contingent took part in joint patrols with the MONUSCO Force and with Congolese defence and security forces. These activities helped maintain a security presence in Bunia and its surrounding areas.
A ceremony attended by authorities
The ceremony, referred to as a “Medal Parade”, was chaired by MONUSCO Deputy Police Commissioner General Senougnon Alain Bamenou. He praised the quality of the work carried out by the Senegalese gendarmes.
The provincial governor of Ituri also attended the event, highlighting cooperation between provincial authorities, MONUSCO and security stakeholders in this area of eastern Congo.
