Nigeria: Opposition seeks common strategy for 2027 presidential election

Nigerian opposition forces are meeting in Abuja on Monday, August 31, in an attempt to define a common strategy ahead of the 2027 presidential election. The summit is organised by the G-100, described as a coalition bringing together political leaders and civil society actors.
Two opposition figures expected
Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi are among the expected participants. In the last presidential election, they came second and third respectively.
The meeting comes as the presidential campaign is already under way. It is intended to allow the various components of the opposition to seek a framework for cooperation in order to offer an alternative to incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
A single candidate is no longer the immediate objective
At previous meetings, the possibility of a single opposition candidate had been discussed. However, based on the information available, that option now appears to have receded.
At this stage, the Abuja summit is therefore no longer aimed at naming a single contender for 2027. Instead, its stated ambition is to establish the foundations for coordination among forces opposed to the current government.
