Senegalese prisons: 50 adapted commode chairs announced for prisoners with disabilities

In a statement dated 1 September 2026, the Forum du Justiciable announced the deployment of 50 adapted commode chairs in prison facilities across Senegal. The organisation attributed the broader rollout to a decision by Justice Minister Me Moussa Sarr.

The announcement follows a meeting between the Forum and the minister on 14 August 2026. The association said it had first raised the lack of toilets adapted for persons with disabilities at Rufisque Remand and Correctional Facility, where a commode chair was subsequently installed.

Equipment allocated across several prisons

According to the Forum du Justiciable, the expansion covers facilities that did not yet have this equipment. Kaolack Remand and Correctional Facility and Koutal Penitentiary Centre are each to receive five chairs.

Three chairs have been announced for the remand and correctional facilities in Mbour, Saint-Louis, Kaffrine and Foundiougne. Allocations of one or two units are also planned for around 15 other facilities, including the remand and correctional facilities in Hann, Thiès, Diourbel, Matam, Tambacounda, Kédougou, Bakel, Louga, Podor, Dagana, Kébémer, Linguère, Gossas and Nioro.

Improving access to sanitation facilities

The Forum du Justiciable believes the equipment should make sanitation facilities easier to use for people with reduced mobility. The organisation also cites overweight prisoners, people with joint disorders and patients who struggle to use squat toilets.
