Flooding in Keur Massar: families leave their homes as local committee raises alarm
In Keur Massar, the Local Development Committee representing several estates and the village of Darou Thioubou has warned of the impact of recent rains. Families have been forced to seek shelter in schools, while residents are calling for swift action by the authorities.
The Local Development Committee bringing together the Oasis, Port, Ancar, Solution and Air France estates, as well as the village of Darou Thioubou, has raised the alarm over the situation caused by recent rains in Keur Massar. According to the body, flooding has forced several families to leave their homes and seek shelter in schools.
Access to several neighbourhoods also remains extremely difficult. The committee links this situation to the incomplete works on the only bypass road. It recalls that Promovilles had raised the possibility of opening the road in the event of an emergency.
Water flows blamed
The committee also reports a deterioration in health and social conditions in the affected areas. It attributes part of the problem to earthworks carried out by a property developer which, it says, altered the natural course of water flowing from Kounoune towards Lac Rose.
According to the local organisation, rainwater is no longer reaching retention basins and is now flowing into inhabited areas.
Call for a swift response
Through its coordinator, Moussa Sow, the Local Development Committee is calling on the authorities to intervene quickly. It is requesting the restoration of natural water drainage routes to assist affected communities.
The committee also says it remains available to the authorities to help identify and implement a lasting solution.
