IMF-Senegal Agreement: Aminata Touré Calls for Welcoming a “Financial Lifeline”

A staff-level agreement has been reached between the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Senegalese authorities on the main economic policy directions that could support a new programme. Aminata Touré sees it as progress that could bring resources to the national economy.

In an interview with RFM, reported by Dakaractu, the former prime minister called for the agreement to be welcomed, describing it as the outcome of more than two years of negotiations. She called the agreement a “welcome financial lifeline” for the Senegalese economy.

Economic recovery and social services

According to Aminata Touré, the expected funding should help revive economic activity in an international environment she considers difficult. She also raised the possibility of strengthening funding for social services, notably family allowances and health facilities.

The general supervisor of Kiiraay – Les Patriotes Républicains praised the actions of the government and President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, as well as those of the finance minister and the prime minister.

The memorandum issue

This reaction comes as Ousmane Sonko has called for the publication of the memorandum relating to the agreement. Aminata Touré said the agreement reached and the arrival of resources, which she considers important for the country, should first be welcomed.

She argued that the debate should not be viewed through a “political-politicking” lens, but in terms of economic recovery and the interests of Senegalese people. She also stated that the arrangements usually applied to such agreements would continue to apply.
