Cabinet meeting: administrative changes mooted ahead of September 2 session

The resumption of the Cabinet meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, September 2, is fuelling expectations of possible changes in the administration. SeneNews reports that Yankhoba Diémé, Minister of the Armed Forces, had previously used the imagery of a “broom” and a “rake” during an interview with Maimouna Ndour Faye of 7TV.

The statement is interpreted by the media outlet as a possible indication of dismissals, appointments or a reorganisation of positions within the state. However, no list of ministries, departments or officials concerned has been put forward at this stage.

Previous appointments and departures

SeneNews notes that decisions have already been made at previous Cabinet meetings. The outlet cites, in particular, 28 appointments approved in late July in Finance, Energy and Higher Education. It also mentions the departure, in early July, of several directors-general described as close to former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, as well as changes in the territorial administration.

A meeting awaited amid a budgetary context

According to SeneNews, the meeting comes the day after an agreement described as “historic” between Senegal and the International Monetary Fund. The website believes that the fiscal discipline requirements associated with this context could influence the executive's next policy directions, both in terms of administrative organisation and public action.
