General policy statement: September 8, 2026 date remains provisional

Prime Minister Al Aminou Lô’s general policy statement is scheduled for Tuesday, September 8, 2026. However, the date set by the Conference of Presidents of the National Assembly comes with a caveat: the President of the Republic may set another date within the statutory eight-day period.

This wording therefore keeps the parliamentary timetable provisional. According to SeneNews, the Conference of Presidents’ decision follows the opening of an extraordinary session on September 1, at which the presidential decree convening the session had not included the general policy statement on the agenda.

A date proposed by the Assembly

The September 8 date was selected at a meeting of the Conference of Presidents held the day after the extraordinary session opened. The outlet reports that preparations are continuing at the National Assembly, particularly regarding the allocation of speaking time and meetings of the Bureau.

However, the holding of the exercise depends on the presidential decision provided for under the procedure mentioned. The head of state may effectively maintain the September 8 deadline by not setting another date, or may set a new date, either earlier or later.

A regulated division of powers

SeneNews links this mechanism to Articles 22 and 77 of the National Assembly’s rules of procedure. Under this arrangement, the Assembly proposes a date, while the President of the Republic retains the possibility of determining another one within the stipulated timeframe.

Confirmation of the timetable therefore depends on a possible presidential decision. Until the statutory period expires or an official announcement is made, September 8 remains the date set by the Assembly, subject to this prerogative.
