Ndiassane Gamou: Reinforcements announced for water and sanitation

Just hours before the annual Ndiassane Gamou, the Minister of Water and Sanitation, Dr Cheikh Tidiane Dièye, paid a courtesy visit to the General Khalife, Cheikh Bouh Sidy Moctar Kounta.

The meeting was held in the presence of the Kounta family spokesperson, Cheikh Khalifa Ababacar Kounta. It notably addressed concerns over sanitation in the religious town ahead of the gathering.

Services said to be mobilised

According to the information reported, the minister assured that the services under his department had been mobilised to meet the needs expressed. The measures outlined concern drinking-water supply, sanitation and flood-risk prevention.

At the request of the organising committee, additional resources are to be deployed. These include water tankers, intended to support the expected influx of visitors to Ndiassane during the Gamou.

The issue of sustainable sanitation

Beyond the measures planned for the event, discussions also covered the town’s structural challenges. The need to sustainably strengthen Ndiassane’s collective sanitation system was raised.

The discussions therefore linked the immediate preparations for the Gamou with the religious town’s longer-term sanitation needs.
