Saint-Louis: 50th Magal of the 2 Rakkas scheduled for September 3-5

The Magal of the 2 Rakkas will celebrate its 50th edition in Saint-Louis from September 3 to 5. Activities, usually organised over a week, will be brought together at Baya Square, according to the organising committee.

Makhtar Faye, chairman of the communications committee of the Kurel of the 2 Rakkas, said the condensed programme was due to the event's proximity to the Grand Magal of Touba and the Gamou. September 5 will be the highlight of the commemoration.

A three-part programme

September 3 will be dedicated to women and the place of work in Islam. A conference is scheduled for the evening, led by Serigne Gana Messerè.

The following day, Quran recitations are planned in mosques in Saint-Louis and surrounding villages. Baya Square will also host Serigne Daaras, Ndongo Daaras and their parents for an awards ceremony for the most deserving talibés in Saint-Louis. This Quran Day is dedicated to Mame Rawane Ngom of Mpal.

On September 5, prayers will be led by Imam Serigne Mame Mor Mbacké ibn Serigne Mourtalla. Serigne Touba will be honoured during this anniversary edition, in reference to the act commemorated by the Magal of the 2 Rakkas, carried out in Saint-Louis on September 5, 1895.

Heat, traffic and emergency services

In response to high temperatures, the Kurel is urging pilgrims to stay hydrated, limit exposure to the sun and avoid swimming in the river branches to prevent drownings. Motorists are also asked to comply with the traffic plan put in place for the event.

On September 5, Abdoulaye Wade Square, in the Sor suburb, is to be reserved for firefighters. Ambulances will not cross the bridge: people requiring care will be transferred from this area to health facilities on the island by river.

Lastly, the committee recommends against gathering on balconies during the rainy season and asks pilgrims to protect Baya Square, where development work is under way.
